Concealers: Mac vs Black Opel

I truly love makeup. I used to be a makeup snob and only used one product. But I realised that I was doing myself a serious disservice by not exploring other options. With that said, I do have my favourites but I also use products that I don’t really have a great relationship with.

Anyways, enough about me: let’s talk about you! Here are a few tips to think of when choosing a concealer:

  1. What tone am I? (Warm or cool)

  2. For what purpose am I using concealer? (Dark circles, blemishes, discolouration, acne scars etc)

  3. How much time do I have to use makeup every single day? (10 minutes, 1 hour, I don’t work coz my life is great, so I have 5 hours for makeup every single day, etc)

The answer to these questions will determine which brand or coverage strength you should choose. If you have 10 minutes for makeup a day, a full coverage concealer may work best (quick and easy).

Here I have two concealers that I use interchangeably depending on the look I want to achieve. They work differently to each other, I love one and like the other. It happens.

Mac

I love this brand of course. It’s one of the reasons why I was such a snob – I was spoiled by it! I have used it for many years and have found a lot of satisfaction when I’ve used it correctly. This one in particular is the MAC Studio Finish concealer.

Pros:

  1. Very pigmented and offers a high level of coverage.

  2. Long lasting.

  3. Perfectly toned to match my skin colour.

Cons:

  1. Must be set.

  2. Expensive (R350 to be exact)

  3. Can be muddy looking.

Black Opel

I am quite new to this brand. I was introduced to it when I went for a job interview at a TV station. They insisted that I only use this brand – that’s probably why I didn’t get the job. I love the fact that they pride themselves on catering for the dark skinned person. This one is the Black Opel True Even Brightening Concealer.

Pros:

  1. Inexpensive (R200 at Clicks)

  2. Can be set very easily using talc powder (cool, right??)

  3. Easy to apply packaging

Cons:

  1. It HAS to be set – this doesn’t work if you want to do your makeup quickly.

  2. It’s very low coverage – and it melts off your face.

  3. Does not really do anyting unless you use a primer .

Darlings, always make sure that when you buy makeup, that you have a good idea about your skin tone, as well as your makeup needs and time frame to do your makeup on a daily basis. If you don’t have any time, don’t buy makeup: It’s vital that you know what works for you and what doesn’t, so that you can be fully satisfied. Alway do your research when trying something new on your skin (this applies if you have money or not).
